Maputo - The Association of Mozambican Lawyers have added their voice in condemning the violation of human rights in neighbouring Zimbabwe, Vista News reported on Monday.
In a press statement the lawyers called on the Mozambican government to "advise President Robert Mugabe to respect human rights in his country".
The appeal by the lawyers comes in the wake of the arrests and torture of opposition politicians and protesters.
"The Association of Mozambican Lawyers classifies this act as a violation of rights of citizens by denying them freedom to hold meetings," the statement read.
The lawyers called on the Mozambican government to use "its influence to help stop the brutality which is being committed by the Zimbabwean government, which is putting in questions democratic principles and respect of human rights in the region".
The lawyers also deplored the poor conditions in Zimbabwean prisons and the restriction of access to lawyers for the detained.
The association also called upon civil and government organisations in the SADC (Southern African Development Community) region to press the Zimbabwean government to respect the rule of law.
