Harare - A court in Zimbabwe has barred police from preventing two badly injured opposition activists from leaving the country to seek urgent medical attention in South Africa, reports said on Thursday.
Harare High Court Judge Bharat Patel ruled on Wednesday that Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) officials Sekai Holland and Grace Kwinjeh should be allowed to leave Zimbabwe to seek life-saving medical treatment outside the country, reports the state-controlled Herald newspaper.
The judge ordered the return of their passports, confiscated on Saturday as the women tried to leave Zimbabwe for South Africa for treatment.
Police are barred from interfering with the movement of the two MDC officials within Zimbabwe and between Zimbabwe and any other country of their choice for purposes of medical treatment and any other lawful purposes they may so choose, the Herald quoted Patel as saying.
Holland and Kwinjeh were among dozens of activists, including MDC founding president Morgan Tsvangirai, who were arrested and beaten by police as they tried to hold a prayer rally in Harare on March 11.
The two women were trying to leave for South Africa on a medical air rescue plane on Saturday when police stopped them, sparking international condemnation.
The two were taken briefly to a police station, and then placed under police guard at a Harare clinic.
