SA gives Zim politician asylum
13/05/2007 13:59 - (SA)
Johannesburg - Zimbabwean politician Roy Bennett has won political asylum in South Africa, reported the Sunday Independent.
The Refugees Appeal Board overturned a department of home affairs' refusal to grant him asylum and Bennett collected his asylum permit on Friday.
He is believed to be the first senior Zimbabwean politician from the opposition Movement for Democratic Change to win asylum in SA.
"I came to South Africa because I am an African and Zimbabwe is an African problem," Bennett told the newspaper.
Bennett was jailed in Zimbabwe after a clash over a parliamentary debate, had his farm seized by "war veterans", was evicted from a rented farm and fled the country when he was accused last year of plotting to assassinate President Robert Mugabe.
