Leaders back Mbeki mediation
19/05/2007 12:31 - (SA)
Harare - Zimbabwean leaders would co-operate with President Thabo Mbeki's efforts to mediate between Zimbabwe's government and the opposition, Zimbabwe's foreign affairs secretary Joey Bimha was quoted as saying on Saturday.
The government would do "its utmost to co-operate with President Mbeki in his efforts to carry out the mandate" given to him by the Southern African Development Community (SADC), the state-run newspaper The Herald quoted Bimha as saying.
Mbeki, often under fire for failing to publicly criticise President Robert Mugabe, is to act as mediator between the government and the opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC).
The government would not endorse any parallel initiatives "wherever they come from", Bimha said.
Bimha, speaking in Harare at a reception to mark Norway's national day, said Mugabe's government hoped the European Union would support Mbeki's mediation efforts.
He said Zimbabwe accepted constructive dialogue and would only co-operate with nations that wanted to "work positively" to solve its problems.
