Zim violating journos' rights

Cape Town - The World Association of Newspapers (WAN) on Tuesday condemned what it said was the Zimbabwean government's repressive policy against a free press.
In a resolution approved at the WAN congress in Cape Town, the body's board called on president Robert Mugabe to stop arresting and harassing journalists and to uphold international standards of freedom of expression in the country.
"The recurrent violations of journalists' basic rights and the complete disregard for the rule of law of the Zimbabwean leadership and law enforcement agencies are unacceptable," the board said.
Stating that the government was seeking to "asphyxiate the very last private media", the board called on Mugabe to end the arbitrary and violent arrest and detention of journalists.
On Monday, WAN president Gavin O'Reilly urged South African president Thabo Mbeki to use his influence to curb "flagrant abuses of freedom" in Zimbabwe.
WAN which describes itself as the global organisation for the newspaper industry, represents 18 000 newspapers world-wide.
