Mugabe to attend Europe summit
30/06/2007 20:31 - (SA)
Lisbon - Zimbabwe's autocratic President Robert Mugabe is expected to be invited to a European-African summit later this year in Lisbon, despite European Union sanctions barring him from Europe, Portuguese officials said on Saturday.
The official speaking on condition of anonymity due to the sensitivity of the issue said Mugabe was likely to be invited as part of a blanket invitation to all 53 African Union member states - as part of a compromise between the two organizations, which are keen to forge a new "strategic partnership."
The EU sanctions against Mugabe threatened to scuttle the summit.
