Court canteen raided
13/07/2007 13:26 - (SA)
Harare - Police raided a canteen at a court in Harare accused of overcharging diners as retailers accused of breaching government price controls were sentenced by magistrates sitting next door, state media reported on Friday.
An undisclosed number of staff were arrested and the canteen ordered to close after the raid on Wednesday afternoon.
Prices at the canteen in Harare magistrates court had become so exorbitant that only private lawyers could afford to eat there, forcing prosecutors and magistrates to bring their own food to work, the Herald daily said.
More than 2 700 retailers and business executives have been arrested since the government ordered them to slash prices on June 26, most of whom have been slapped with fines after appearing before magistrates.
