Ex-cop 'spied' on archbishop

Harare - It emerged in Zimbabwe on Wednesday that the private investigator who claims to have taken incriminating photos of the Catholic archbishop at the centre of a sex scandal, is a former member of President Robert Mugabe's police force.
The outspoken Archbishop of Bulawayo, Pius Ncube has been accused of having affairs with women from his diocese.
The husband of one of his alleged mistresses, is suing Ncube.
Private investigator Ernest Tekere worked in the Criminal Investigations Department of the Zimbabwe Republic Police for 20 years, the official Herald newspaper revealed.
Mugabe's government has greeted with glee news of the allegations against Ncube, one of the 83-year-old president's most vocal critics who once openly admitted that he has prayed for Mugabe's death.
Ncube's lawyer says the case is a set-up.
The scandal has been top of state news reports for two days. Newspapers have published pictures, apparently captured by a secretly-installed surveillance camera of a man they say is Ncube, shown undressing in a room with a woman waiting on a bed.
Women 'church members'
Tekere, who now runs a company called Home Guard Security Services, described the archbishop as a womaniser.
He claimed that during covert surveillance of Ncube he saw several women entering to his room. "There were old ladies, nuns and some young ones," Tekere told the Herald newspaper.
"He is not doing his job of sowing the holy seed, but womanising. The number of women who visited his house during our investigations were too many," he added.
He claimed all the women were members of Ncube's church. There has been no independent verification of the claims.
The scandal is proving a boon for Mugabe's government, as it has diverted national attention away from chronic economic problems such as shortages of most basic commodities following the government's controversial slashing of prices.
