Mbeki to meet Zim leaders
21/11/2007 17:14 - (SA)
Johannesburg - President Thabo Mbeki will meet leaders of Zimbabwe's governing party and main opposition Movement for Democratic Change on Thursday.
Presidential spokesperson Mukoni Ratshitanga said that Mbeki would make a stopover in Zimbabwe of a few hours on his way to the Commonwealth Summit in Uganda.
Ratshitanga said: "The president will have talks with both President Robert Mugabe's ZANU-PF and the two factions of the MDC."
Ratshitanga would not be drawn on who Mbeki would see from these parties saying: "Right now one cannot state explicitly who he will be meeting."
The consultations were "in relation to the mandate that he was given by SADC to facilitate dialogue between political leadership."
Mbeki, who has refused to publicly criticize Mugabe, was asked by fellow leaders in the Southern African Development Community (SADC) in March to mediate an end to the stand-off between the government and the opposition in Harare.
