MDC: The march is on
22/01/2008 18:31 - (SA)
Harare - Zimbabwe's opposition has vowed to go ahead with a march through Harare on Wednesday even though it has been banned by police.
"The march is on!" Nelson Chamisa, a spokesperson for the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) told Deutsche Presse-Agentur dpa on Tuesday.
Police late Monday banned the march, saying they did not believe the protest would be peaceful.
In a live interview on state radio, spokesperson Wayne Bvudzijena said the police had cancelled the march because they believed the MDC had a "sinister motive".
Tensions had been rising ahead of the march, planned for midday. State media has already accused the opposition of "spoiling for a fight".
"It is felt by the police that it is not in the interests of public security for the march to proceed," Bvudzijena said. He said the police did not believe the march would take place in a peaceful and tranquil environment.
He blamed what he called "exasperating statements" from MDC leader Morgan Tsvangirai and party officials Chamisa and Ian Makone at rallies during the weekend.
He singled out MDC statements alleging the just-completed process of delimiting constituencies was "a fraud".
The march was meant to call for food, jobs and a new constitution before elections that President Robert Mugabe insists will be held in March.
