Johannesburg - Greek nationals in Zimbabwe are strongly behind the country and will continue to support the government in its efforts to develop communities, say reports.

Speaking at a reception this week, the Greek Ambassador to Zimbabwe, Mihail Koukakis, hailed relations between the two countries, saying his government would continue to work with the government in Zimbabwe "to uplift the standards of living in the country".

"We have two major projects, which we hope to complete for the benefit of the people of Zimbabwe," he is quoted by the Herald as saying.

"We are currently working with the authorities on a food programme worth $70 000 while the Chivhu Hospital project would get a further $75 000 for the uplifting of the hospital."

Ambassador Koukakis, who was working on Greek versions of several Zimbabwean books, said he was enchanted with the Zimbabwean folklore and it was "important to share experiences between the two countries".

The Secretary for Foreign Affairs, Joey Bimha, praised the Greek government for coming to the aid of Zimbabwe "in its most trying times."

He said: "We have had an excellent relationship with the Greeks in education, health and culture. We hope the assistance given to our country would continue and expand for the benefit of the two countries."
