Johannesburg - A new poll gives Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe 56% of the vote in this weekend's national election, Harare's Herald newspaper has reported.
The survey indicated that the ruling Zanu-PF party would probably clinch 41 Senate seats and 137 House of Assembly constituencies.
The study was done by the University of Zimbabwe, overseen by the head of its department of political science and administration, Joseph Kurebwa.
It assessed the views of 10 322 people drawn from all the wards in Zimbabwe.
A similar poll by Kurebwa before the 2005 parliamentary elections was not far off the actual outcome, reported the Herald on its website.
Conducted over a period of a month, this year's survey projected opposition MDC faction leader Morgan Tsvangirai taking between 26 and 27% of the presidential vote.
Independent candidate Simba Makoni was likely to manage between 13 and 14%.
The other independent presidential candidate, Langton Towungana, was likely to make up the numbers with 0.2% of the total vote count, the survey found.
Tsvangirai's faction was likely to win 13 Senate seats and 53 House of Assembly seats.
The survey gave the other MDC faction led by Arthur Mutambara six and 18 seats in the Senate and House of Assembly elections respectively.
