Official results put MDC in lead
01/04/2008 08:25 - (SA)
Harare - Zimbabwe's opposition Movement for Democratic Change remained in the lead over President Robert Mugabe's Zanu-PF on Tuesday, winning more than a quarter of the parliamentary seats after weekend polls.
The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission announced the MDC had won 56 of the 210 parliamentary seats, while the Zimbabwe African National Union -Patriotic Front trailed behind with 53.
Results continued to trickle in at a snail's pace, which had seen the MDC accusing the commission of deliberately sitting on results in a bid to fix the election in favour of Mugabe, who had ruled since independence from Britain in 1980.
