'Zanu-PF will fight and will win'
04/04/2008 12:18  - (SA)

  • Mugabe 'plotting to rule illegally'
  • All eyes on Zanu-PF meeting
  • Mugabe begins Zim crackdown
  • NYT journo arrested in Zim
  • 'Mugabe has started a war'
  • Zim senate results coming in
  • Riot police raid Zim hotels
  • Mbeki: Accept election results
  • Zim: African leaders to step in?
  • Zanu-PF politburo summoned
  • Harare - A leadership meeting of President Robert Mugabe's ruling party will decide on Friday to contest a run-off election against opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai, a senior official said.

Referring to a meeting of the Zanu-PF politburo, a senior party member told Reuters: "I have no doubt the resolution will be in favour of a run-off, I have no doubt about that.

"We cannot just hand it to Morgan (Tsvangirai) on a silver platter. We will fight for it and we will win."

The politburo is meeting to decide Mugabe's next move after Zanu-PF lost control of parliament for the first time in the veteran leader's 28-year rule.

    No results

Six days after last Saturday's elections, no results have been released for the presidential poll. Zanu-PF and independent projections indicate that although Tsvangirai has won, he failed to get the absolute majority needed to avoid a run-off.

The opposition says its tallies show Tsvangirai won and should be declared president immediately, ending Mugabe's uninterrupted rule since independence from Britain in 1980.

Senate results, which must precede the presidential outcome, only began trickling out on Thursday night, fuelling suspicions that Mugabe is trying to buy time to stave off defeat.

A run-off would be held on April 19, three weeks after the elections, but some MDC sources allege Mugabe plans to extend that to 90 days to give him time to regroup.

They believe he would try to ensure victory in the second vote by using militias and powerful security forces to cow MDC supporters.

'The people of Zimbabwe have already made a choice'

"I am not aware of such a plan (to delay run-off) but no matter how much they may want to buy time or beat up people or employ other dirty tricks, the people of Zimbabwe have already made a choice by voting for a candidate (Tsvangirai) that will take the country forward," MDC spokesperson Nelson Chamisa said.

Constitutional lawyer Lovemore Madhuku, of rights group National Constitutional Assembly, denied reports that the law requires the electoral commission to issue presidential election results by today.

"There is no such law. It is being said by non-lawyers, non-experts. There is no law that says you have to announce the presidential result, or any results, within a certain period. There is no limit," he said.

"The bottom line is that Zanu-PF does not want to, and will not hand power to the MDC. It's extremely worrying that ZEC (Zimbabwe Electoral Commission) is delaying the announcement of the results."

Zimbabwe - Mugabe - Zanu PF accountability - Economic solutions - Morgan and Mokoni
    04/04/2008 12:34
Mugabe and his military and police henchmen cannot be given a free ticket out they have much to answer for .The torture and murder they perpetuated is one thing but their manipulation of the economy, interest rates and currency rates that enabled them to cleverly rob the savings base of the country effectively stealing from pensioners and the whole population reducing them to poorper's has destroyed the lives of millions of Zimbabweans , white black and other - So called Black business people who aligned themselves to Zanu PF and profiteered and took over or stole farms, companies and businesses by intimidating owners and then borrowing funds from the Reserve Bank at 20 % interest rates in 100 000 % inflation and then paying back a fraction in real US$ terms due to enormous orchestrated Z$ currency devaluation's also need to be stripped of these assets. The new Government needs to nationalise all these industries, companies, houses and assets and then float them on the stock exchange and then take the funds raised and use them to recapitalise the pension funds and rebuild the farming and industrial sectors of Zimbabwe. Mugabe and all the Black and few white elite who have profiteered through the Mugabe regime at the expense of everyone else cannot be allowed to retain their ill gotten wealth they must account and be stripped of their privilege. Change would never have come to Zimbabwe without Morgan and the MDC supporters, they have sacrificed enormously for all of us there are many heroes from this new Zimbabwe Cold War era from 1999 to now. If Morgan was not a true leader then why is he still the last man standing ? Why was he the only one who has been prepared to stand up all these years and be counted with millions hiding in fear behind him and in his shadow. He will receive the support he needs and the skills required to run the country !!! We will support him !! Can he do any worse than Mugabe ? Mokoni is still Zanu PF and he stood by and watched what his party were doing to the country and its people he must account !!! We also do not need to dish out open tickets so others can come in under false pretence and attempt to rape the country during its recover either The situation should be managed allowing Zimbabweans and also allowing those with genuine intentions and requisite skills of any colour or nationality ie those who truly want to participate in the rehabilitation of the country, to be given fair open transparent and unbiased opportunities to progress in the country whilst also helping to rebuild it. South Africa and its people as a whole has in many ways been extremely good to many exiled Zimbabweans political or economic exiles - but unfortunately they have also in many cases exploited many of these Zimbabweans and have profiteered off their plight and desperate situations and abused them in their time of weakness and need. However we should always be grateful for the many and some of the exceptional South Africans Like Mr Paul Verryn of the Central Methodist Mission Johannesburg to whom many Zimbabweans owe their lives. - Proud White Zimbabwean

How can Mbeki and SADC accept results that have not even been published. - vdW

      Why ?
    04/04/2008 12:46
So Bob will ensure that further suffering and hardships will be brought to bear against his brothers and sisters ... And the wonderful SADC will stand around and say nothing. Zimbabwe is well and truly ruined and will never be what it was but other African countries should at least make it clear that Bob needs to go. This whole 'African brother' and 'Against Western ideas' nonsense needs to be trashed if Africa is to have any chance. Sadly, I am planning to leave A.S.A.P. before SA = Zim 2. - Saddened ...

      Please!!!!
    04/04/2008 12:47
Mugabe had the change to restore the faith of the rest of the world in Africa by showcasing that Africa can solve it's own political problems - even if it's at a snail's pace (and at his own expense). Why can't a bus just run him over??? - Hakuna Matata

      Give the old man amnesty...
    04/04/2008 12:53
This was expected. Uncle Robert will do anything to ensure that he remains in power, despite the people electing the MDC. Remember, the old **** does not want to be prosecuted for his human rights violations over the years so he is fighting for his survival. What's the solution? Guarantee him political amnesty, then he will accept defeat! - nephew

We all know what's going on
    04/04/2008 12:55
Robert Mugabe is delaying the results to formalize a strategy to hold onto power. I predicted he had something up his sleeve and here it is. Again the South African government will sit by and do nothing as he retains power illegally. He will never give up power because he will face criminal charges and he knows this. He will blatantly rule illegally and laugh off critics as puppets from the West. - LM

      Zim Election results Dealy
    04/04/2008 12:57
Judging from the protracted delay in announcing the election results it's clear to descerning individuals Mr. Mugabe lost the presidential election by a significant margin of at least 10%. This however is not the main problem, the issue at stake is the personal interests that him and his acolytes had embarked on during his 28year reign. So as it stands, this is presenting a sticky situation. They are a proud bunch and do not want to vindicate their detractors. The exit is the main problem here! - China Mahala

      Zim Scam
    04/04/2008 12:57
Here's a cool idea. Hold an election and then don't release the results, just in case you've lost. Bob Mug is never going to relinquish power, he's clearly been caught with his pants down and needs time to figure out what to do next. Rigging is a time consuming business, but as the old adage goes "If at first you don't succeed..." - WTF

      Future of Zanu PF
    04/04/2008 13:00
If Zanu PF would like to rule Zimbabwe again sometime in the future, I suggest that they relieve themselves of Mr. Mugabe as he is their undoing. To draw simpathy from people, Zanu PF needs to do what is right and I am sure they will not wait too long for the chance to rule again! - China Mahala

And our Government say we must accept the results
    04/04/2008 13:14
If Mugabe wins he would have stole the election, why else would they delay the results. Our goverment who are supposed to be champions of democracy still choose to support this dictator who seems to have lost his grip on reality. - Brenton

      ZANUPF Cheats
    04/04/2008 13:18
You can bet your bottom dollar, if the results say ZANUPF obtained 40% of the vote, it is in actual fact 30% more than they really received. They still did their best to steal the result, but they just couldn't cheat fast enough. You can also bet that they'll try and delay the vote-off as long as possible to give them maximum intimidation time. ZANUPF is a group of liars, beggers, thieves and pirates. They should be charged for crimes against humanity. - Miela

      Precidency issue in Zim
    04/04/2008 13:18
I think Mugabe needs assurance that no American or British companies will be allowed to come to Zimbabwe and take over their resources like they did to many African countries. They may come to inject some capital but should not own a bigger proportion of the shares, Zimbabweans should call the shorts. Look at us here in Mzanzi, we've got resources but can't process them because they are being owned by other countries, & the inflation is busy going up. - Emcee

      Confused...
    04/04/2008 13:21
Considering that we have some of the best (self-proclaimed) civil-rights activists in South Africa, who fought to free people from the oppression of an Apartheid regime, I remain confused why these activists do not speak / act out against the perpertrator of human atrocities north of our borders, who is also robbing people of their human rights and dignity. Plenty to say during Apartheid, nothing to say to a corrupt Zanu PF. The ANC will never convince me on "people rights" propaganda they spew. - AntiBob

letter to be published in South African papers in 5 years time. Dear Zimbabwean people - we apologise for our lack of action during the 90's to rescue you from the persecution of Robert Mugabe. As we knew of all the crimes being committed against you and failed to act - we are as guilty of the crimes as the people who committed them. Our leaders and we as citizens have failed you once again! To know of a crime and not to react is as guilty as that person who commits the crime. - mungo orpen

If I recall correctly the SADC and SA government was accusing the DA and the west from "pre-judging" the Zim elections a mere 3 weeks ago. Now they judged the election free and fair (as it turns out) one week and counting before results were out!The rules are allways bent in favour of Mugabe. It's not a question of Africa being to spineless to act. It's a matter of Africa actually supporting Bob. - kwk

      To 'Emcee'
    04/04/2008 14:17
Investment of capital etc must, and should be done, on the terms of the country donating the money. Whilst exploitation should be closely monitored, injection of funds from other countries should be welcomed and appreciated by Zimbabwe. The economic woes of SA have nothing to do with ownership of resources but are due solely to Corruption, BEE, Eishkom and Incompetent Government Ministers. Africa needs to take responsibility for Africa and stop expecting the rest of the world to just give. - Typical ...

      African Apathy
    04/04/2008 14:28
With all due respect to all Zimbabweans, I think the manner in which Zimbabwe has diminished into a state of disrepair can be attributed to the insignificance of the state of Zimbabwe. Unfortunately Mugabe greatly accelerated the speed at which the country came into complete ruin, but at the end of the day African countries do not have enough significance to attain global intervention at times of crises. The world and neighbours have little repect for such states and therefore arent gonna help - Alistair Main
