  • Johannesburg - Zimbabwe's embassy in South Africa has shut the door over elections in that country, ostensibly to avoid undermining the electoral process.

"The embassy... will not be issuing any statements, comments or conducting interviews on the above-mentioned elections, as in so doing the embassy will be usurping powers of those legally-constituted bodies entrusted with the conduct of the electoral process," ambassador Simon Moyo said on Monday.

Headed "Zimbabwe's 2008 harmonised elections", Moyo's statement read that the courts and Zimbabwe Electoral Commission must be accorded maximum respect.

"Issuance of speculative, unsubstantiated and inciteful statements by any quarter is irresponsible to say the least. Let us exercise maximum sobriety, discipline and allow the electoral process (to) take its course."

Zimbabweans were still waiting for the official outcome of last week's election.

Meanwhile, Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) spokespeople were being cagey about details of MDC leader Morgan Tsvangirai's visit to South Africa on Monday.

A regional office spokesperson in Johannesburg, Nqobizitha Mlilo, said he would know later in the day which details he would be allowed to make public.

The party applied to the Harare High Court on Monday for a ruling to force the release of the results, but the application was postponed to Tuesday.
