SA media workers granted bail
07/04/2008 21:57 - (SA)
Johannesburg - Two South African media technicians appeared in court in Harare on Monday and were granted bail, the Department of Foreign Affairs said.
Spokesperson Ronnie Mamoepa said the department was as yet unable to confirm the charges brought against them by the Zimbabwe authorities.
The two technicians, Sipho Maseko and Abdulla Gaibee, were arrested on March 28.
Last Friday they were acquitted of contravening the Information and Protection of Privacy Act.
However, they were re-arrested as they left the Harare court, seemingly under the premise that the judge's ruling was not "proper".
They were in Zimbabwe under the employ of Globecast, which provides satellite services to some broadcasters covering the elections.
The two men will appear in court again on April 8 and 11.
"Upon release Mr Sipho Maseko is due for admission to hospital on a medical related condition, following the intervention of the South African Embassy in Harare. Mr Maseko is in a stable condition," Mamoepa said.
The Department of Foreign Affairs and the South African Embassy in Harare would continue to provide consular assistance to the two South African citizens.
