  • Harare - Zimbabwe's main opposition Movement for Democratic Change criticised on Tuesday the " deafening silence" of African governments in the aftermath of the country's recent elections.

MDC secretary-general Tendai Biti said "the defeaning silence by our brothers and sisters in the region, in the African Union" was symptomatic of the continent's failure to react to crises and made reference to the 1994 genocide in Rwanda.

"One of the problems with our institution is its failure to respond," he said.

"We (Africa) responded poorly in Rwanda and a million people were killed. I say don't wait for dead bodies on the streets of Harare. Intervene now. There's a constitutional and legal crisis in Zimbabwe."
