  • Harare - Zimbabwean presidential candidate Simba Makoni strongly criticised on Wednesday the delay in announcing results from March 29 elections, saying the hold-up would only raise tensions.

"The inordinate delay in announcing the results of the presidential election only serve to heighten tensions and is not serving the best interests of our country," Makoni said in his first public comments since the poll.

The former finance minister, who split from the ruling Zanu-PF to run as an independent, would not be drawn on whom he might support in a possible run-off between President Robert Mugabe and opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai.

"Until they announce the results I am not prepared to speculate," he told a press conference in Harare.

"Our votes are not the property of anyone and it is our right as citizens to get the final results without further delay," he said. "It gets me very worried."

Unofficial results put 58-year-old Makoni a distant third behind Movement for Democratic Change leader Tsvangirai and Mugabe, but his support could be vital to either candidate if the election commission announces a run-off.
