Mbete: Zim cause for concern

  • Cape Town - The delay in the release of Zimbabwe's election results is cause for concern, National Assembly Speaker Baleka Mbete said on Friday.

"We are concerned that two weeks after elections there hasn't been a formal official announcement," she told journalists in Cape Town.

She said it would be better to wait for a full report from MPs who had been part of the SADC observer mission to Zimbabwe before pronouncing on the matter.

Zimbabwe would also be discussed at the 118th Inter Parliamentary Union (IPU) assembly which starts in Cape Town on Sunday.

IPU Secretary General Anders Johnsson said a report detailing human rights abuses of MPs in Zimbabwe will be delivered on Friday.

"I would not be surprised if a number of members take the opportunity to talk about Zimbabwe," he said.

Zimbabwe is expected to send one delegate to the IPU, which currently has 146 members.
