  • Lusaka - Zimbabwe's opposition said on Saturday that President Robert Mugabe had used the military to effectively carry out a coup and urged regional leaders meeting in Lusaka to end his "dictatorship".

"The military has basically taken over," said Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) number two Tendai Biti, part of a delegation led by opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai which arrived earlier in the Zambian capital.

"There is a constitutional coup d'etat that has taken place there and that's why this meeting is very critical," Biti told journalists.

He called on leaders of the 14-nation Southern African Development Community (SADC) to "speak out clearly and decisively against his (Mugabe's) dictatorship and the status quo."
