SA observers for Zim recount
17/04/2008 14:41 - (SA)
Pretoria - Six South Africans would be sent to Zimbabwe to join an SADC team that would observe the vote recount from 23 constituencies, Deputy Foreign Affairs Minister Aziz Pahad said on Thursday.
Ballots from 23 constituencies in Zimbabwe's parliamentary and presidential elections will be recounted on Saturday at the request of President Robert Mugabe's ruling Zanu-PF party and two constituencies at the request of the opposition MDC.
"The SADC is sending a team to ensure that the opposition parties or their agents are allowed to be present when this process unfolds, and indeed to ensure that this process which the ZEC called for is within the legal framework and to the satisfaction of all the parties," Pahad said.
He said President Thabo Mbeki's facilitation team would also travel to Zimbabwe mostly to interact with the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission and to see how the release of results of the March 29 election could be speeded up.
