Beatings on the rise in Zim
24/04/2008 08:36 - (SA)
Harare - An association of Zimbabwean doctors said on Wednesday its members had treated at least 323 patients who had been beaten and tortured since the elections at the end of March.
"The total number of cases seen since April 1, 2008 is 323," the independent Zimbabwe Association of Doctors for Human Rights (ZADHR) said in a statement, adding these are only the cases seen, but many more could have gone unreported.
"It seems likely that there are substantial numbers of similar cases occurring across the country which have not been presented to ZADHR members," it said.
Patients reported with injuries clearly stemming from organised violence and torture, allegedly meted out by security forces.
"By far the commonest alleged perpetrators are now uniformed forces (police and military)," it added.
The doctors' association condemned the continuing violence and torture and appealed to the United Nations, African Union and the 14-nation Southern African Development Community (SADC) to engage authorities to bring an end to the "systematic assault on large numbers of Zimbabweans".
