Tsvangirai: The old man must go
28/04/2008 20:14 - (SA)
Johannesburg - Zimbabwean leader Robert Mugabe "cannot be president" with parliament controlled by the opposition, the head of the country's main opposition party said on Monday.
"Mugabe should concede that he cannot be president without controlling the parliament," Morgan Tsvangirai, leader of the Movement for Democratic Change, told reporters in Johannesburg in neighbouring South Africa.
"Mugabe must find a way to retire. The old man must go and have an honourable exit," he added.
Tsvangirai has claimed victory against Mugabe in a presidential election on March 29 and his party has defeated Mugabe's ruling party to win control of the legislature in parliamentary elections held on the same day.
The official result of the presidential election has not been released but Britain and the United States have put pressure on Mugabe to concede defeat, while independent election monitors say no candidate won an outright majority.
Government supporters have called for a second round of the election.
Zimbabwe has a strong presidential system of government instituted by Mugabe during his 28-year rule but analysts say the president still needs the support of parliament to pass key legislation.
