Presidential candidates to meet
29/04/2008 13:25 - (SA)
Harare - Zimbabwe's electoral commission will meet presidential candidates this week to discuss results of a recount of last month's election, the chairperson said on Tuesday.
"They are expected to meet soon. I expect that it could be this Thursday," George Chiweshe, chairperson of the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) told AFP.
Opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai, 56, ran in the March 29 election against the country's veteran leader, 84-year-old Robert Mugabe. Tsvangirai has proclaimed himself the winner, based on his party's calculations.
Mugabe supporters say no candidate won outright and there should be a run-off but no official result has so far been released, more than a month after the vote.
Chiweshe said that the candidates or their representatives would be asked to compare their results gathered at individual polling stations with the results compiled by the electoral commission and to agree on the final results.
If there is an agreement, the results will be announced after the meeting.
Asked what would happen if, as appears likely, the different sides do not agree on the results, Chiweshe said simply: "They have to agree because they are relying on figures from the same source, the same polling stations.
"So they must agree, they have to agree," said Chiweshe, adding that he could not say how long the procedure of verifying the results would take.
