UN discusses Zim crisis
29/04/2008 20:30 - (SA)
Pretoria - The issue of Zimbabwe was discussed when the Security Council met on Tuesday afternoon, said Foreign Affairs.
The department's head of multi-lateral affairs George Nene was briefing media at the Union Buildings on the second last day of SA's presidency of the UN Security Council.
The Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) was expected to talk to the Council about developments in Zimbabwe since the March 29 presidential polls for which results are still outstanding.
Nene indicated that Tuesday's meeting would be a closed one. SA's second presidency of the Council will end on Wednesday.
He said the Zimbabwean issue dominated much of the debate that also revolved around the strengthening of relations between the UN and the AU among other things.
He said the Zimbabwe issue was raised by the UN secretary general Ban Ki-moon, the UK and the US.
"It was not a surprise - we had no problems in them raising it," said Nene.
Another issue that was discussed was the issue of small arms, requesting the secretary general to report on small arms on a biennial basis.
"This report is now before the council," said Nene.
On the issue of piracy in Somalia, Nene said France, the US and Panama had put forward a draft resolution for states to take action to curb piracy emanating from Somalian territorial waters.
"We are still considering the draft resolution and have also referred it for legal opinion. The draft resolution will be considered next month," he said.
