  • Harare - Twenty people have been killed in politically motivated attacks in Zimbabwe since elections on March 29, a spokesperson for the opposition Movement for Democratic Change said on Wednesday.

"We have received and recorded 20 dead from various provinces in the country," the spokesperson, Nelson Chamisa, told AFP.

The opposition earlier said 15 of its supporters had been killed in post-election violence by supporters of President Robert Mugabe and his Zanu-PF party and hundreds injured.

Chamisa said more than 5 000 families had been displaced from their homes in recent weeks due to attacks by pro-government militias.

"The cases of violence are increasing, with an escalation in the torching of houses," Chamisa said.

"The numbers of displaced people is just unbelievable, we can't cope. We have well above 5 000 families that are now displaced," he said, adding that police were not doing much to help curb the attacks.

"What is disturbing is that when we report to the police, their hands appear to be handcuffed, their approach is lethargic," he added.
