Mbeki to probe Zim vote violence
02/05/2008 22:30  - (SA)

  • Mugabe 'must call off his dogs'
  • Teachers die in Zim bloodshed
  • 10 Zim activists arrested
  • 20 die in Zim violence - MDC
  • 'Stop shielding Mugabe'
  • Zim silence Mbeki's demise?
  • Pretoria - President Thabo Mbeki told religious leaders in Pretoria on Friday that he will send a mission to investigate political violence in Zimbabwe.

"He assured us that he would do everything to ensure that a second round of the run-off election happens in an atmosphere of peace," Nyansako Ni-Nku, head of the All-Africa Conference of Churches, was quoted by Sapa as saying.

"In order to achieve that, the president said that right away they will despatch a team to check every allegation of violence," he said.

Human rights groups and regional observers have reported an upsurge in political violence in Zimbabwe since the March 29 elections, which the opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) says has left 20 of its supporters dead.
