MDC to prepare for run-off
13/05/2008 15:18  - (SA)

  • MDC: Regional observers enough
  • Zim violence could reach 'crisis'
  • Zim rejects Tsvangirai demands
  • Johannesburg - Zimbabwean opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai, who has been out of the country for more than a month, will return home by the weekend to prepare for a run-off election, his aide said on Tuesday.

Tsvangirai is scheduled to address a major rally in Harare on Sunday where he will kick-start his campaign for the run-off against President Robert Mugabe, the date of which has not been announced, said George Sibotshiwe.

"We are certainly going back this weekend. We may even be back before then," Sibotshiwe told AFP.

The Movement for Democratic Change leader beat long-time incumbent Mugabe in the first round of voting on March 29 but fell just short of an overall majority needed to avoid a run-off.

Annoucing his intention on Saturday to contest the run-off, Tsvangirai said he planned to be back home within a few days.
