Need to amend Zim constitution
21/07/2008 17:26 - (SA)
Harare - Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe said on Monday there was an agreement between his ruling party and the opposition Movement for Democratic Change on the need to amend the country's constitution.
"Yesterday (on Sunday) we agreed, Zanu-PF (Mugabe's ruling party) and the two MDCs, that our constitution as it is should be amended variously," said Mugabe at a ceremony after signing a deal paving the way for full-scale talks with the opposition.
MDC leader Morgan Tsvangirai hailed the signing as an "historic occasion".
"This is a very historic occasion," said Tsvangirai, calling the agreement "the first tentative step" towards ending the country's protracted political crisis.
