  • Johannesburg - Fraud charges will be brought against 34 public servants in the Witbank magistrate's court this week, the Special Investigating Unit said on Sunday.

They include education, health and welfare police, printing works, justice, water affairs, and roads and transport officials in Gauteng and Limpopo, said SIU spokesperson Senzeni Ngubeni.

The charges concerned the alleged fraudulent receipt of social grants, specifically child support grants, disability grants and care dependency grants.

Ngubeni said 43 000 cases of social grant fraud had been identified throughout the country.

Of these, 2 324 cases - involving R2 314 028 -- were Mpumalanga where there had been 240 arrests, with 189 convictions so far.

Almost 500 fraudsters had acknowledged debt and would repay the money at 15.5% interest.
