Fraud accused's assets frozen
13/02/2007 19:10 - (SA)
Johannesburg - Assets worth about R1.9m belonging to a Pretoria couple accused of fraud and their children were frozen on Tuesday, said the asset forfeiture unit.
"The asset forfeiture unit of the national prosecuting authority restrained assets in the amount of about R1.9m from Martina Theron, her husband Michiel Theron and their three children, Ivan, Jean and Gizelle Theron," said AFU spokesperson Lucinda Moonieya.
The assets restrained include bank accounts of the whole family, moveable property, two BMW vehicles and four properties.
The couple are facing charges of fraud and theft in the specialised commercial crimes court in Pretoria. Their children, aged 15, 19 and 21, are not being charged.
"It is suspected that the Theron Trust and the children received affected gifts from Martina and Michiel," said Moonieya.
Martina was employed at Iemas Co-operative as an accountant and is accused of defrauding Iemas of R2m.
Her job was to ensure that payments made by members into the Iemas bank account were allocated to the correct members' accounts.
Moonieya said Martina apparently credited her own and her husband's Iemas accounts with payments from other members.
She also asked Iemas for refunds, supposedly for members who had overpaid, but put these payments into Theron family accounts.
The couple are due to appear in court on March 1.
