  • Johannesburg - A 49-year-old Eastern Cape man sentenced on Thursday to 25 years imprisonment for raping a 10-year-old girl, police said.

Captain Jackson Manatha said Mzikayise Gijana raped the girl at Lambata village in Ngqamakhwe in December 2002.

An Mthatha High Court judge sentenced Gijana after a trial that took almost two years.

"Police welcome the sentence as it sends a strong warning to other people that the law will take its course against rapists," said Manatha.
