  • Port Elizabeth - A man allegedly killed his wife after she left their four-year-old child alone to go drinking in Port Elizabeth, Eastern Cape police said on Saturday.

She was raped and stabbed to death in Walmer township at 04.30 on Saturday, said Captain Verna Brink.

Her husband was apparently angered by the fact that she had neglected their child to go to a local tavern.

The man initially claimed that he had found her in the street with stab wounds and then dragged her home.

In a separate case, a 27-year-old man was killed, allegedly by a friend, when the latter struck him over the head with a pipe during an argument in Greenshields Park at 08.30.

Also on Saturday at 07.30, a 35-year-old minibus taxi driver was killed when he drove into a tree in Walmer.

"He was driving down 8th Avenue when he lost control and hit a tree."

A blood sample would be tested to determine if alcohol was involved.

Police suspect that there may have been another person in the taxi at the time of the collision.

Brink said one of the doors and the car's bonnet were open.
