Court told of Stacie's 'legacy'
04/03/2008 21:49 - (SA)
Cape Town - The increasing number of young children reported missing on the Cape Flats, then found raped and murdered, had led to Missing Children South Africa, the Cape Town High Court heard on Tuesday.
Pieter Boschoff, who is attached to the voluntary organisation, was called by prosecutor Mornay Julius to testify before Acting Judge Richard Brusser at the trial of security guard Richard Engelbrecht.
Engelbrecht is to be sentenced for the rape and murder of Annestacia Wiese, 11, and for indecently assaulting a three-year-old girl two years earlier.
Boschoff said Annestacia's rape and murder had prompted the launch of Missing Children South Africa.
He told the court: "On the day she disappeared, we led a protest march to Parliament to demonstrate the outrage of the community."
Nationwide outcry
He recalled that another young girl, Sheldean Human, had gone missing in Pretoria just before Annestacia's disappearance, and her body was found later as well.
He told the court: "There was a public outcry nationwide, and we decided something had to be done."
He said both Sheldean and Annestacia had worn pink on the day they disappeared.
Boschoff recalled that a third girl, Mikayla Romans, had also gone missing and that her body was found only one block away from her home.
The hearing continues.
