Couple reported missing traced
02/07/2004 12:51  - (SA)

  • Tourist couple feared hijacked

  • Cape Town - The couple reported missing in the Transkei region of the Eastern Cape have been traced to a resort on the Wild Coast.

Matthew James Henderson, 34, and his wife Daphne, 30, were in Port St Johns last Saturday but had not been heard from since.

Daphne's father, Allen Schonker, became concerned when he did not hear from her for almost a week and contacted the police.

However, a relieved Schonker, who was travelling to Port St Johns, said on Friday his daughter phoned him from Coffee Bay and she and her husband were safe.

"They said they had travelled to some out-of-the way resorts on the Wild Coast had not been able to charge their cellphones," he said.

Schonker, who lives in Glencoe in KwaZulu-Natal, said the couple left his home more than a week ago on a trip to Cape Town via the Eastern Cape and the Garden Route.

He said his daughter and Henderson, who is a British citizen, were planning to travel throughout South Africa before leaving to settle in Australia.

Police spokesperson Supt Mzukisa Fatyela confirmed that the couple had been traced.
