Johannesburg - A search is on for a lion reportedly on the loose on Johannesburg streets, said West Rand police on Thursday.

Karen Jacobs of Honeydew police station said three residents had reported either seeing or hearing a lion in the Rietfontein area.

"We cannot confirm or deny the reports at this stage," she said.

"Three animal shelters/enclosures in the area have done a head count and so far say there are no missing lions."

But, she said, police would wait to see what happened during Thursday evening as lions were more active during the night.

"A sector policing vehicle, police from Muldersdrift and Honeydew areas are on the lookout for the lion."

A security guard claimed to have seen the lion and two children said they heard a lion roar.

"This is a difficult situation at the moment," Jacobs said.

"If anyone has any information, they should contact the police immediately."
