Johannesburg - Operation Basadi, a part of the 16 Days for Activism Against Women and Child Abuse campaign, has resulted in the arrest of 76 suspects in the Vaal Rand policing area on Thursday night.

"The operation became part of the government campaign of 16 Days of Activism, whereby the government has declared a war against violence and abuse towards women and children," said police spokesperson Superintendent Maria Mazibuko.

Fourteen were arrested for rape and two were arrested for domestic violence.

Other suspects were arrested for assault, robbery and attempted murder.

All 76 would appear soon in different magistrate's courts in the Vaal Rand area.

"The purpose of the operation was to send out a message that violence against women and children will not be tolerated."
