Pretoria - The girl who was "recognised" by Viola and Frederick Erasmus as missing seven-year-old Sheldean Human, has turned out to be someone who looks just like her.
Theoné Croukamp, also seven years old, is now scared that other people might also try to grab her, thinking she's the missing girl.
Sheldean disappeared from her Ernest Street home in Pretoria Gardens, west of the city, on February 19.
Unine Croukamp of Pretoria West, Theoné's mother, said she was shopping with her mother, Tonia Goosen, and her daughter on Saturday at Kwaggasrand shopping centre when the mix-up occurred.
The Erasmus couple saw them and were convinced Theoné was Sheldean.
Unine Croukamp said: "The woman (Viola Erasmus) sent the security guards to (question) us, and I told them Theoné was my child. We saw them following us and secretly watching us.
'That tannie's watching me'
"The security guard even held the photograph in the newspaper of Sheldean next to Theoné's face to make sure that it wasn't her.
Theoné told him her name, to confirm that she wasn't the missing girl, said Unine.
She said her daughter was upset and told her "Mamma, that tannie's watching me."
Unine's husband, sergeant Wessel Croucamp, said his daughter was afraid someone would mistake her for Sheldean, and grab her.
"My child is in Grade 1 in Simon Bekker Primary School, the same one that Sheldean attended a year ago." "My wife also works at the school. We have told Theoné to stay away from the school gates and the fence, and not to go when people call her," he said worriedly.
The Croucamps have asked people to make quite sure it is Sheldean before they phone the police, because they could endanger the lives of Sheldean look-alikes.
