  • Johannesburg - A 46-year-old man shot dead his wife in a primary school classroom in Ndumo village outside Ingwavuma before turning the gun on himself, said northern KwaZulu-Natal police on Friday.

Mabopha Mathenjwa went to the Ekuhlehleni primary school at 19:00 on Thursday and asked to speak to his wife who had stayed late to study with other teachers, said captain Jabulani Mdletshe.

"The other teachers left him with Thembeni Mathenjwa, 42, also a teacher at the school, but returned to find her lying dead in a pool of blood about 10 minutes later."

Thembeni had three gunshot wounds to the head.

The teachers then went to Mabopha's house about a kilometre from the school, where he was found dead with a gunshot wound to his head.

The couple had been living apart for about a year following an argument concerning their ability to have children, Mdletshe said.

He said however that the motive for the killing was unknown.

"We are investigating a case of murder and an inquest."
