FF slams racist Sheldean e-mail
05/04/2007 18:18 - (SA)
Pretoria - The Freedom Front Plus on Thursday condemned "in the strongest possible terms" an e-mail allegedly from a Tshwane Metro councillor implying white people mourned the death of white crime victims but ignored black victims.
The letter was an apparent reference to the outcry over the murder of seven-year-old Sheldean Human, allegedly by family friend Andrew Jordaan in February. Her death received major media coverage, with mass demonstrations outside court whenever Jordaan appeared.
According to the e-mail, black and coloured girls were also murdered, but people were never asked to wear pink clothing in remembrance.
It also said that black people should stand together "to fight this white demon", the Afrikaans daily Beeld reported.
Said FF Plus councillor Conrad Beyers: "It is totally unacceptable and shocking that such racism occurs in the metro's administration."
The e-mail further states that "many stupid white people" had no complaints with the rugby and cricket world cup tournaments in 1995 and 2003 but always complained about crime and how it would affect the Soccer World Cup in 2010.
The councillor, who is a female, also allegedly wrote that white people thought all blacks were criminals but had sympathy for their "brother" Mark Scott-Crossley. [Scott-Crossley was convicted of murder after throwing a man from Limpopo into a lion enclosure].
Beyers said: "The matter must be investigated urgently and the necessary steps should then be taken. This will be a test whether the ANC-controlled council maintains double standards regarding racism," Beyers said.
Experience had taught that the ANC was quick to jump on the racism-bandwagon in case of white-on-black racism, he added.
"We will now see how energetically the ANC acts against black-on-white racism," Beyers said.
The Tshwane Metro Council could not be reached for comment.
