Algiers - A Muslim fundamentalist gang massacred an Algerian family of five people during the night at Oued Merzoug on the outskirts of Tipaza, residents of the town said Friday.

The group attacked a house on the southern outskirts of Tipaza at 11:00pm (2200 GMT) and shot dead the people inside, including two children.

On March 12, an Islamic extremist group killed a family of 11 as they slept to the east of Tipaza, which lies about 70km to the west of the capital, where the Atlas mountains overlook the Mediterranean Sea.

The attack late on Thursday came two nights after Islamic extremists massacred 16 people, including eight children, in two families in the village of Ouled Yaich, 50km south of the capital.

Attacks by armed groups in highland territory in the Algiers region have intensified in recent weeks. Twelve other civilians were massacred at Bouarfa on Sunday.

Ouled Yaich and Bouarfa are close to Blida, a garrison town 50km south of the capital.

Blida is also the headquarters of the first military zone, which covers both Algiers and the Mitidja plain, including an area known as - Sapa-AFP
