Charles: 'I'm here to give pleasure'
15/11/2001 09:40 - (SA)
London - Prince Charles, celebrating his 53rd birthday on Wednesday, spent
the evening at the theatre with Camilla Parker Bowles.
Before attending the comedy Noises Off in London's West End
theatre district, the prince blew out a candle on a birthday cake
at a fund-raising luncheon and listened as guests sang Happy
Birthday.
"This morning I received rather too many cards than I would have
liked referring to baldness, failing sight and middle-aged spread,"
he told the other diners.
Then the prince, referring to an incident last week in Latvia
when a 16-year-old schoolgirl slapped him in the face with a bunch
of carnations, said: "If I hear one more joke about being hit in
the face with a carnation by a Bolshevik, fascist lady, I don't
know what I'll do.
"I'm very glad it's given pleasure to everybody," he added.
"It's what I'm here for."
The fund-raising lunch was for the benefit of the Prince of
Wales Hospice in Pontefract, northern England. - Sapa/AP
