Cutting the cellphone cord

Kinlochbervie, Scotland - A Scottish hotel is offering to baby-sit the mobile phones of guests who have trouble cutting the electronic cord.

Kinlochbervie Hotel, in the far northwest on Scotland's Atlantic coast, said on Wednesday it has set up a round-the-clock answering service so that visitors trying to wean themselves from their phones can still be reached in an emergency.

Visitors can hand their phones in on arrival, and staff will be on hand to answer them 24 hours a day, in hopes of easing the minds of those who might worry about missing important calls.

Hotel employees will tell callers that the person they are trying to reach is on vacation and unavailable unless it is an emergency. If the call seems urgent, staff will contact the phone's owner. If not, they'll take a message to be given to the guest when they check out.

"Many of our guests are the archetypal stressed-out executives, so our mobile armistice gives them the chance to ditch the constant interruptions of their phones and really immerse themselves in our peaceful surroundings," said hotel owner Stewart McHattie.

"It is good to talk, but we think we are offering the ultimate in call waiting," he added. - Sapa-AP
