Bomb blast in Algeria
04/06/2002 20:46 - (SA)
Algiers - Four people were wounded, one seriously, when a bomb exploded
on Tuesday in Algeria's northeastern Kabylie region, local residents
told reporters.
The victims were injured as they passed by a rubbish dump where
the bomb was concealed at Ait Mesbah, near Tizi Ouzou, the capital
of Grande Kabylie, 110km east of Algiers.
The most badly injured person was taken to hospital in Tizi
Ouzou.
Units of the Salafist Group for Preaching and Combat (GSPC) led
by Hassan Hattab operate in the area.
Like the Armed Islamic Group, the GSPC has rejected a national
reconciliation policy introduced by President Abdelaziz Bouteflika
aimed at ending a decade of civil war between security forces and
armed Muslim fundamentalists.
Algeria's Islamic extremist insurgency has claimed some 150,000
lives, mostly those of civilians, according to the press and
political parties. - Sapa-AFP
