Goat sex: Cruelty rap possible
30/09/2002 15:37  - (SA)

Polokwane (Pietersburg) - A man charged with bestiality after he was accused of having sex with a goat could face an additional charge of cruelty to animals.

The National Council of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals has asked Limpopo police to add the charge.

"What happened to that goat is very cruel," said NSPCA farm-animal unit inspector Kingston Siziba. "Our council is here to speak on its behalf."

Siziba said sex with an animal was in contravention to act 71 of 1962.

The act stipulates that any person who ill-treats, infuriates or terrifies an animal will be deemed guilty of cruelty and could face up to 12 months in jail without the option of a fine.

Dingaan Rammala (40) of Kga-Molepo near Polokwane is out on R500 bail until his case resumes in the Mankweng magistrate's court on October 16.

He was not asked to plead when he appeared before the court for the first time on September 17.

Rammala was arrested after a villager said he caught him in a state of rapture, oblivious to the deafening bleating of the goat.

Angry villagers allegedly attacked Rammala with their fists and a knobkerrie before a woman reportedly came to his defence.

He was handed over to police amid much muttering by people that they would never eat goat meat again. - African Eye News Service
