  • e.tv suspends Eben Jansen
  • Die Burger

Cape Town - e.tv has drawn the curtains over the fate of sport editor Eben Jansen following a disciplinary hearing on Monday.

Jansen said on Friday he would be on tenterhooks for the entire weekend awaiting a decision on his future with the broadcaster.

A reliable source said a recommendation had been put forward for Jansen's dismissal and that he would be given an opportunity to defend his position on Monday.

Jansen was not available for comment on Monday.

A woman, only known as Julia, answered his phone at home saying Jansen was not there and that he was not allowed to comment.

Jansen was suspended with full pay on October 17 for remarks he made about British soccer boss Sir Alex Ferguson in a main news bulletin.

Jansen and sport journalist Craig Marais reportedly suggested that Ferguson might not be all that innocent while reporting on the scandal surrounding Nadia Abrahams, who alleged Ferguson had groped her.

Spokesperson Quraysh Patel said the matter was internal and declined to comment. News chief Joe Thloeloe also declined to comment.

Die Burger was told Jansen had been assisted at the hearing by San Reddy, the channel's chief news anchor.
