Milosevic trial adjourned
01/11/2002 13:17 - (SA)
The Hague - The war crimes trial of Slobodan Milosevic was adjourned on Friday when the former Yugoslav president did not appear in court, complaining of exhaustion.
"The guards told us that the accused complained of extreme
fatigue and exhaustion," presiding judge Richard May said.
A doctor will examine Milosevic on Friday.
The judges are worried about the completion of the trial with
the apparent frail health of the 61-year-old former president.
"In light of the state of health of the accused, the length and the complexity of the case, the chamber is concerned about the best way to ensure the completion of this trial," May said.
He has asked the prosecution and the amici curae, lawyers
appointed to assist the court in the case, to submit their
propositions on how best to proceed within the next seven days.
Milosevic has repeatedly fallen ill during the trial that
started on February 12. After extensive health checks, doctors
found Milosevic was facing "severe cardiac risks" and recommended
shorter trial days.
The court has been working with a new system with less court
time since the second part of the case, focussing on Bosnia and
Croatia, started on September 25. - Sapa-AFP
