Zambian university closes
05/11/2002 14:25 - (SA)
Lusaka - One of two universities in Zambia has been closed after irate students looted campus property to protest against a decision by university authorities to increase the minimum pass mark, a newspaper reported on Tuesday.
The students ran amok, destroying property on the campus of the Copperbelt University (CBU) after authorities increased the pass mark from 40%t to 50%, the state-run Times of Zambia
said.
Armed riot police struggled to disperse the student
demonstrators at the university, which is in Zambia's second
largest city of Kitwe, 400km north of Lusaka.
Student union leader Muzala Shinka was quoted as saying students rejected the new pass mark because facilities such as the library and computer laboratories were dilapidated, making it difficult for students to study.
The university decided to close the campus due to "lawlessness
and damage of university and personal property" by students, the
Times of Zambia reported. - Sapa-AFP
