  • Harare - Hopes by Zimbabwe's only private daily to resume operations were shattered on Wednesday when the High Court dismissed its application to have equipment seized by police returned.

Daily News lawyer Mordecai Mahlangu said Judge Tendai Uchena had dismissed the application but gave no reason for his decision.

"The judge dismissed the application, but he didn't give any reasons," Mahlangu told reporters after the ruling was made in chambers.

The embattled paper had last week made an urgent application seeking an order to have the computers confiscated by the police after the paper was found to be operating illegally, returned.

The Daily News was shut down two-and-half weeks ago because it had not registered with a state-appointed media commission, as required under strict press laws.

When the paper subsequently tried to register, its application was turned down. - Sapa-AFP
