  • A Zimbabwean newspaper closed down by authorities last month is planning to launch an internet version from South Africa, according to a report on the Voice of America website, www.voa.gov.

For now, the new website of the Harare-based Daily News, at www.daily-news.co.za/ has only a few undated articles and a forum for readers' comments.

The newspaper's director of corporate affairs, Gugulethu Moyo, told BBC News Online that the paper hopes to start posting fresh news on the website early next week.

However, most Zimbabweans lack internet access, so the priority for the paper is to get the presses rolling again.

"We are hoping to be back on the streets of Zimbabwe soon - that's where we want to be," said Moyo.

The Daily News plans to challenge its closure at a court hearing set for Thursday.

Police closed the newspaper on September 12 after Zimbabwe's Supreme Court said it was operating illegally. The paper had refused to register with a state-run media commission as required by a tough media law introduced last year. The newspaper later applied for a license, only to be rejected.

The Daily News is Zimbabwe's only independent daily newspaper and has been a harsh critic of President Robert Mugabe and his government, in stark contrast to the state-owned media, which are seen as government mouthpieces.
